Is Skipping Menstruation Due To The Intake Of A Morning After Pill?

default
Posted on Fri, 22 Sep 2023
Question: I took a morning after pill on June 30 within hours of having unprotected sex. This was about a week after my period. My period then came about July 15. When that period started I had constant headaches. They lasted for weeks. They finally went away. However, I have totally skipped my period for the month of August. Is this due to taking the pill? Should I be concerned? Or just wait to see if it comes in September?

Brief Answer:
Wait for September periods.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

First of all do not panic.

As you might be aware that emergency contraceptive pills contain high dose of progesterone hormone. Withdrawal bleeding after taking such pills is quite erratic, it can be early or late and it can be scanty or heavy. As you have experienced the withdrawal bleeding after 15 days, you can expect your next regular cycle in the month of September.

Secondly, your headache can be due to effect of progesterone hormone in the emergency contraceptive pills. I will suggest you to get proper counseling done regarding safe and protected sex activity. This will help you to prevent unwanted pregnancy and STDs and subsequent side effects of the medication.

Please feel free to communicate with me again. I hope this answer helps you. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Contraceptive used? urine pregnancy test.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

As you have had your periods or withdrawal bleeding on 15 the July and if you have skipped the August periods, I would like to know about few things.
1. Have you used any contraceptive after 15July?
2. Have you done urine pregnancy test after missing August month's period ?

If you have used proper contraceptive methods and urine test is negative; I will suggest you to wait for your expected menses.

I hope this answer helps you. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Wait for withdrawal bleeding.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

If you are sure that you have no sexual activity after the episode of taking emergency contraceptive pills, then you need not worry about the pregnancy.

You can either wait for the onset of periods or opt for progesterone withdrawal. You can seek prescription support from your treating doctor for Tablet Regestrone two times a day for 5 days, withdrawal bleeding usually occurs within 3 to 7 days after stopping the tablets.

Delay in the period can be due to many other factors and not due to emergency contraceptive pills.

I hope this answer helps you. Thanks.
