Is Placental Lakes Cause Of Concern In Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Fri, 1 Aug 2014
Question: Hello
My wife is 32 weeks pregnant currently.
During her 20 week's scan 2 things were found: 1) Low Placenta (2.5cm), and 2) Internal Blood Spot. which had improved after 3 weeks of rest along with Duphaston and Proluton. Planceta moved up 4.5cm and blood spot gone.

This week: She had gone for 32 weeks scan and found that: 1) Placenta's position is good. 2) AFI 11cm. 3) "Few Small Placental Lakes seen". 4) Baby's weight 1.6Kg
Current Treatment: Duphaston 10mg (Tab) twice a day and Proluton (Inj) weekly.

Queries: 1) Is Placental Lakes cause of concern at this stage 32 Weeks ? if Yes what should we do to improve the condition ?
2) Is the current treatment good and should she continue with Duphaston (twice daily) and Proluton (weekly) ?
Thanks in advance.

Brief Answer:
Normal development

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir, Thanks for trusting health care magic.
Placental lakes are basically related to the maturity of placenta.
Lakes are usually seen at this gestation and are normal,
Weight of the baby, AFI and position of placenta are all normal and according to desired normograms.
The treatment given to her is adequate and according to international guidelines.
All she needs now is good diet and adequate rest.
Keep visiting her gynecologist at regular intervals as scheduled.
Take care and in case you have other questions i will be happy to help.

Thanks Dr. for the answer, it really helps.

Just one clarification. My wife is taking 'Duphaston 10mg (Tab) twice a day'.
Is it safe for baby? as she is taking this Tab from last 2 months and her Gynec has advised to continue till delivery.
Is there any side effects which we should be careful about.

regards

Brief Answer:
safe in pregnancy

Detailed Answer:
Duphaston basically has progesterone which is of Paramount importance in continuation of pregnancy.
It is routinely prescribed drug and is safe for both mother and baby.
Usually no significant side effects except for excessive sleep and breast tenderness in some patients
