Is It Safe To Have Vicodin For Nutcracker Esophagus?

default
Posted on Wed, 29 Oct 2014
Question: Can you take an occasional Vicodin when you've been diagnosed with nutcracker esophagus? Recent manometry revealed this diagnosis. Two years ago I had been taking Vicodin qid, prescribed for bulging discs, arthritis and fibromyalgia for 14 years with no abuse or escalation of use. I was told at that time, after endoscopy, that I had possible acholasia and to stop taking Vicodin. I did, learned to manage the pain and have had none for two years. I recently went for suggested follow-up manometry, noted above.

However, I very recently sustained a severely painful low back injury, unrelieved by Tylenol or NSAIDS, and I'm curious if the brief and occasional use of Vicodin would be harmful.

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
well.... could be a problem

Detailed Answer:
opiates give achalasia

so, it's a potential problem (the manometry pictures in the article are going to look REAL familiar).
the other point is that treating pain... is not as good as actually getting rid of the problem. Medications working on the dysmotility would be better
metoclopramide
possibly baclofen (muscle relaxant).
That being said, these are highly variable diseases/conditions/drug effects and it would be reasonable to try .. pretty much anything. None of the side effects are either fatal nor irreversible; you might have worse dysmotility, but you might not witht he vicoden and just have pain relief.
thank you for the interesting question!(note date on article... this is NEW finding)
