Is It Advisable To Take Norethisterone For Delayed Periods?

Posted on Mon, 20 Jul 2015
Question: Hi
I am 21 years old. I had my periods on 13th April 2015 which lasted for 5 days and ended on 18th April 2015. After that I had sex on 19th April, I took an i-pill just to avoid any risk and got my periods again on 28th April 2015. Now its been two months and I still haven't got my periods yet. I did pregnancy test and it came out to be negative. One of my friend suggested to take norethisterone 5 mg once a day for 5 days.
I want to know if I should take this medicine or not? I don't have any history of irregular menstruation. Please help me.
Thank you

Brief Answer:
Can be due to hormonal disturbance.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The absence of periods in your case with a negative pregnancy test is likely to be due to a hormonal disturbance caused by taking I-pill. Since this is the first time that has happened, there is no need to worry. You can take norethisterone 5mg thrice a day for at least 5 days. After you stop taking the pill, the periods will begin after 3-4 days.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.

Thank you for your quick response Doctor.
However, I forgot to mention one thing in my question. After having my periods on 28th April I took an i-pill again on 6th May.
Does this alter the dose of norethisterone I have to take?
Also, what are the possible side effects if I take norethisterone thrice a day?
Should I take ethinylestradiol along with it?

Brief Answer:
The dose will be the same.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Repeat intake of I-pill does not alter the dose of norethisterone needed.
Norethisterone can cause nausea, gastric upset, headache, breast heaviness, etc. All the side effects are mild and well tolerated.
There is no need to take ethinyl estradiol with it.
Hope my answer is helpful.
