Is Infection Throughout Body When Diagnosed With Chlamydia?

default
Posted on Tue, 18 Aug 2015
Question: I have been diagnosed with chlamydia, but does it infect the entire body or just certain parts (eg throat, anus, penis)? If it's just certain parts, how do you know which part?

Also, between infection and diagnoses, I performed oral sex on a guy. I know it is possible that I infected him, but realistically what are the odds (in percentage terms) that I infected him? Need some peace of mind here. Thanks

Brief Answer:
It might affect rectum, urethra, throat or testes in adult males

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. Chlamydia infection might cause urethritis (urinary passage infection), proctitis (rectal infection) and pharyngeal infection in adults. It can also affect the testis and epidicymis.

In newborns it might infect the eyes causing conjunctivitis and the lungs leading to penumonia.

2. Symptoms involving urination, stools or a sore throat might highlight the region of infection in adults. Testicular involvement causes unilateral testicular pain, epididymitis, tenderness, and swelling. However many patients will have the infection but it will not cause any symptoms.

3. The transmission of chlamydia infection among male partners after oral sex is from 0.5% to 2.3%. Therefore there are more than 97 percent chances that you did not transmit chlamydia infection to him by performing oral sex.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,

Thank you for the answer. Very helpful. All of my symptoms are in my penis - burning urethra, frequent urination - and not in my throat or anus. We also engaged in mutual masturbation. He did touch my penis (I do often have precum), rubbed penises and I then ejaculated on to his body. I don't believe that his penis touched my semen and we cleared it up using tissue so I don't think it touched his hands. What are the odds percentage-wise that he could be infected through this. Thanks

Brief Answer:
The risk of transmission of chlamydia is 1 to 2 percent from above event

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

1. The chances of you giving chlamydia infection to your partner through the above method is 1 to 2 percent.

2. Associated risk of transmission is higher with anal sex and is about 10 percent.

3. Please do not panic about transmission of chlamydia. However it is important that you take complete treatment and he should get tested if there are any infections suspicious for chlamydia infection.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
