Is Homocysteine Level Of 11.6 Umol/L Considered High?

default
Posted on Fri, 24 Aug 2018
Question: Hello. My Homocysteine level of 11.6 umol/L was reported as high by Quest Labs, but this website cites normal levels at 10-12. I am a 70-year-old female who is experiencing mild cognitive impairment. My folate level is 13.9 and B-12 is 825. I do not take metatrexate nor phynetoin, or have been exposed to nitrous oxide. Also my A1C is 5.7.
My question is: I my current level of 11.6 actually high? Also, how can homocysteine level be lowered? Is there a dietary solution?

Brief Answer:
Not high

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Homocysteine level is not considered high unless it reaches 15 umol/lit. However , it is recommend that it is kept under the level of 10 umol/ lit to decrease the risk of stroke..
Since your Folate and vitamin B12 are within normal range, then homocysteine levels can be lowered by vitamin B6, B12 and Folic acid supplements. I hope I answered your questions.
