Is Heavy Bleeding Normal And Abdominal Cramps Normal After Taking MTP Pills?

default
Posted on Mon, 21 Apr 2014
Question: Its been 5 days I have taken the MTP pills. The first pill I took orally 7 days back and then a day after I took 4 pills, 2 at a time with the gap of 2 hours. I started bleeding that day. The bleeding was very heavy for first two days, it somewhat reduced after that and has been constant then on, I am still bleeding quite heavily compared to a 5th day. I have been bleeding in clots as well. Is it normal? I do have light abdominal cramps as well. Please advice.

Brief Answer: HEAVY BLEEDING & ABDOMINAL CRAMP ARE NORMAL. Detailed Answer: Hello, Thanks for writing to us. On taking MTP pills, bleeding will continue up to 7 days until abortion procedure is completed. It is quite NORMAL phenomena to get heavy bleeding with cramp. However, we need to rule out incomplete abortion (failed case) in this context. Here, I suggest to undergo one pelvic ultrasound scan after waiting 2 to 3 days to check retained bits OR placental tissue (if any). In that case, you need to consult with local GYNECOLOGIST for assessment. It is seen that around 5% cases require surgical method (D & C) to evacuate uterine cavity completely. Maintain genital hygiene properly to avoid infection. Hope, I have answered your query. Kindly, close the discussion if you don't have any other query. Wish your good health and take care yourself. Hi Doctor, Thank you for your advise. Just wanted to check would it be wise to take any medication to prevent the clotting of blood ? Also, do I need to take any antibiotics like Toxim 500 to prevent any sort of infection ?

Brief Answer: DETAILS ARE GIVEN BELOW. Detailed Answer: Hello, Thanks for follow up query. YES, you can take Antibiotics like TOXIM 500 to avoid intrauterine infection. However, hemostatic agent like Tranexamic acid group of drug is usually NOT advised until aborted fetus/ placental tissue is expelled out from uterine cavity. Painkiller with antacid can be taken if you feel extreme abdominal cramp. Incomplete abortion can cause EXCESSIVE BLEEDING. Therefore, I suggest to contact with nearest Gynecologist for assessment and proceed one ultrasound scan for evaluation. Hope, it helps for you. Kindly, close the discussion. All the best and good luck. Regards, Dr Soumen

Hi Doc, The bleeding has stopped today, only spotting and very light flow as of today. Could you please suggest when should I get the TVS ( Scan ) done ? Also while in pain, I've taken Spasmoproxyvon Plus with Rantac 300. Do I start taking the Toxim 500 tabs from today - 2 tabs a day for 5 days ? As per my research it's suggested to get the TVS done after 2 weeks of taking the first pill, could you kindly shed some light as to what would be best date to get the TVS done ? FYI - I took the first pill on 21.03.14 and the remaining 4 on 23.03.14 from the Mifty Kit.

Brief Answer: FOLLOW-UP SCAN IS REQUIRED AFTER 2 WEEKS. Detailed Answer: Hello, Thanks for additional queries. 1) Follow-up ultrasound scan is usually done after 2 weeks from starting of medical abortion in uncomplicated case. However, suspected incomplete abortion with heavy bleeding requires an early scan within 1 week. 2) YES, you can start antibiotic like Toxim 500 twice daily for 5 days to avoid intrauterine infection. 3) In this case, you can undergo one TVS scan after 2 weeks as your bleeding has stopped. Light flow may continue for another 1 week and your next period will be delayed from exact due date due to hormonal imbalance. Additionally, you should do home pregnancy test at 2 weeks interval to check whether pregnancy hormone (beta-hCG) comes down to normal or not. It will be NORMAL within 4 to 6 weeks. Hope, it helps for you. Kindly, close the discussion. Regards, Dr Soumen
