Is Alkaline Phosphatase Value Of 143 A Cause For Concern?

default
Posted on Thu, 8 Oct 2015
Question: I went for normal blood screening. My alkaline phosphastis reading was 143 and my ggc was normal. My doctor said it was due to a bone issue but was not too concerned. He said to come back in 3 months to re test. I'm worried that it could be bone cancer although I have no other symptoms. My psa is very low. Is this level very high or should I be more concerned.

Brief Answer:
2.5% of normal population can have values above upper limit

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The normal range for blood tests can vary slightly from one lab to the next but your values would be considered slightly above the norm for most labs.

It is important to note that the normal ranges are true for only 95% of the population and 2.5% of the normal population have values above the upper limit.

Because ,it is only a slight increase then it is not likely significant, as your doctor stated and repeating it would be fine.
When repeated, may also want to consider vitamin d and calcium to further check the bones. Bare in mind that with bone cancer, the levels of ALK phos would normally be a lot higher.

Isolated significant increase in alkaline phosphatase can be due to bone disease, can also increase in kidney disease (if history of kidney problems). Not likely due to any issue with the liver if all of the other liver parameters are normal.

I hope this helps , feel free to ask any other questions
