Is Rotavirus Vaccine Advisable For An Infant?

default
Posted on Wed, 22 Feb 2017
Question: Hi Doctor,
My daughter is 6 weeks old.
As per the vaccination card provided by the hospital, she is due for following vaccinatins:
1. OPV-1/IPV-1
2. DTPw/DTPa-1
3. Hib-1

Also, there are optional vaccines "Rotavirus vaccine" and "Pneumococcal conjugate" which are mentioned as can be given. Please suggest whether we should also go for Rotavirus vaccine and pneumococcal conjugate along with other vaccinations and what are these optional vaccinations? Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Rotavirus vaccine is worth giving

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone through your query and understand your concerns. My suggestion to you would be to definitely opt for Rotavirus vaccine. It protects from viral diarrhea caused due to rotavirus (the most common virus causing diarrhea in children). I would leave Pneumococcal cojugate vaccine upon your choice. It is a costly vaccine. It provides protection from Streptococcus pneumoniae, a bacteria which is an important cause of pneumonia (among other pathogens which could also cause pneumonia).

Feel free to write back.

Hi Doctor,
Thanks for your reply.

One more query regarding feeding the baby.
We are giving her "Nan pro 1" since birth as an additional feed over the mother's feed whenever required as suggested by the doctor at the time of birth.

Shall we continue to use "Nan Pro 1" or shall we go for some other option as she is 6 weeks old now?

Brief Answer:
Breast feeding would be the best

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

Let me emphasize on the fact that breast milk is the best possible milk for a baby and there can be no alternatives for the same. Most formula milks are cow milk based and hence difficult to digest. Moreover they make the child more prone to complications and infections. Mother's breast milk is produced on the demand of the baby. Hungrier the baby, more vigorous is the suck. More is the suck, more is the amount of breast milk produced. Giving formula automatically reduces the demand of the baby and thereby the production of breast milk. All you need to do is to switch back to exclusive breast feeding and the production will increase automatically. All you need to do is to monitor the urine output. If the frequency is more than 6 times in 24 hours, you would know that the amount of feeding is adequate. If the amount of passage of urine is less or if the child is lethargic you would need to take the child to a doctor without delay.

Needless to say, I would not insist on giving any other formula. If you still wish to continue NAN 1 Pro, you can continue and no other forumula is needed.
