Question: I have had severe cough with bloody sputum for about 4 days now, I am taking ZPAC, is this normal to have bloody sputum? I was on coumadin, but this is on hold for now

Hello,

bloody sputum may occur during pneumonia. So this is not something unusual. Let me make one more comment though. You mentioned coumadin so I gather you have some cardiological issues, although you haven't mentioned them in your text. Patients with comorbidities do better with more 'advanced' antibiotics or combination of antibiotics. Azithromycin (ZPak) is safe to take when the resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae is low in the area. Otherwise either combination with amoxicillin or using levofloxacin is recommended.

I don't doubt your treatment, I'm just saying that if you haven't got any better during the first 3 days of treatment then perhaps you should ask your doctor to assess your condition once more.
