I Was In A Car Accident Four Months Ago Where

Question: I was in a car accident four months ago where I was rear ended at 20-30mph. My spinal and brain MRI were normal but my right hand moves slower than my left and when I try to touch my fingers to my thumb on my right hand I sometimes pause or move my individual fingers back and forth repeatedly before I actually touch my thumb or touch the same finger two or three times while trying to move to the next finger. If I extend and shake both hands in front of me my right hand is markedly slower. I saw a neurologist who said she didn’t know why and that was the end of it but I really want to know why my hand is the way it is and what is going on. I’ve also been taking amytriptaline for 12 years and it causes jerky movements after I take it at night. The neurologist said it couldn’t cause this though. What could be the problem with my hand?

Brief Answer:
Nerves may be damaged by trauma as well.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service.

I have read your query and understand your concerns.

Since the MRI of your brain and spine was normal, you should not be worried about anything serious.

After trauma, nerves may suffer a contusion from compression, traction, rotation, etc. resulting in this way in dysfunction such as slowing of movements.

It is a problem that should improve with time if it started after the car accident.

If there is no improvement, a nerve conduction study of the affected hand and arm may be necessary to understand better your condition.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Let me know if I can assist you further.
