Question: I recently got done blood tests of my son XXXX (Age 22 years). His complete blood test report is attached for your perusal. I seek your advise on the following points of concern:-

1. Bilirubin - Total : 1.86 mg/dl (normal range 0.3-1.2 mg/dl)
2. Bilirubin - Direct : 0.37 mg/dl (normal range <0.3 mg/dl)
3. Aspartate Aminotransferase (SGOT) : 42.53 U/I (normal range <37 U/I)
4. Iron : 187.43 ug/dl (normal range 65-175 ug/dl)

Please advise if he needs to start some medicine to bring the above values in normal range.

Brief Answer:
Insignificant

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

The bilirubin and SGOT levels are not significantly raised. Your son does not require any medications for this. He can repeat the liver function test after 4 weeks.

The slightly raised iron also does not carry any significance and you can ignore it.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dear Dr. XXXXXXX - Thanks for your response. I have one more query. My Son is taking Protein Powder (Muscle XXXXXXX Whey Gold Brand) - one scoop of 10 gms daily in the morning. This has been advised by his Gym instructor.

I hope the raised bilirubin and SGOT levels are not because of this Protein Powder. Please advise if it is safe to have this Protein Powder.

Regards
