I Have Had Symptoms Of Covid-19 For Over 12 Days

Question: I have had symptoms of Covid-19 for over 12 days now. Starting with a mild cough and a low fever of about 100.4 and severe nausea. The cough does not bring anything up but I do produce a lot of mucus in my throat and have done so for the entirety of the time I've been sick. Chest X-Ray was done on day 5 and came back clear, however it is now day 12 and my fever has remained at 99.0-99.8 consistently and I still get severe tremors and chills when I move about. I have also been suffering from severe, crippling panic attacks most of this time. I spoke with my primary care doctor today and he said I should be out of the woods, but my anxiety is telling me that if my body is clear of the virus I should not be having such severe fatigue, chills, and mild lingering fever. I worry that it is in my lungs and I have pneumonia starting to develop even though I do not have shortness of breath. THere is minor chest pain off and on that is not consistent with breathing or coughing. Because of the strain on the hospitals (I live in XXXXXXX State), I fear going just to be told I'm not sick enough to be triaged or looked at in-depth. Basically, I am looking for some kind of reassurance here, as I am reading so many reports of people going several days (I am on day 12) after first symptom before becoming critically ill. While I am feeling mostly better, the fatigue, chills, cough, mucus, and mild fever (99.5 average) are still deeply concerning me.

A few more things:

- Temperature is normal upon waking and within the first few hours of the day.
- Temperature is read in the ears, and there is almost always a large discrepancy between the ears and the readings from each of them.
- One ear may read 100.2F and the other may read 99.2F
- Sometimes, in the case of a higher reading in one ear, a follow-up reading in the same ear will yield a lower temperature in the matter of a minute (i.e. 100.2F on first reading of right ear; 99.3F on second reading of right ear in a 60 second time frame)

I also had severe heart palpitations during days 4-7 which caused me disturbing insomnia and night terrors. The night terrors were such that I could feel my heart pounding in my sleep, causing me to feel physical pain as I slept until I woke. Upon waking, the pain was nonexistent and my heart was beating nromally.

My resting heartbeat is normally 55BPM-68BPM although the past 12 days it has been consistently around 86BPM and up to 97BPM at rest and under the effects of clonazepam.

Blood pressure readings are anywhere between 103/77 while relaxed and before bed and 145/96 when anxious.

I have no way to measure my O2 levels.

My main question is: Can I still develop severe illness from the Covid-19 virus after having symptoms for 12 days of varying severity?

Brief Answer:
Most probably you will recover

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to Ask A Doctor service.

I have reviewed your query and I will answer your specific question.

After having symptoms of mild to moderate severity for 12 days, most probably you will recover.
Very less chance of developing severe illness.

People who develop severe illness rapidly get worse.

Relaxation and doing things to take your mind off corona is best way to recover faster. Also regular exercise inside house. Only limited exposure to social media.
