I Have Had Littlle Or No Appetite Off And On

Posted on Sun, 23 Jun 2019
Question: I have had littlle or no appetite off and on for the past few months. All started back in December when i started getting PVCs and left rib pain from a hard fall I had in November. I freaked out thinking it was heart problems so all i did was worry excessively and i know i caused a lot of the anxiety. Also from bloodwork my homones are non existant. My dr thinks that has a lot to do with how I've been feeling. I just had hormal pellets inserted and until that starts working my dr prescribed me Buspar to help with the anxiety. However, my concern still is my lack of appetite. It has gotten better. Before smells would make me sick. My rib still hurts at times as well and not gonna lie, i go to dr. Google and of course that doesn't help at all. So just wondering if its gonna take time for my appetite to come back once my anxiety and hormones are at bay or should i be concerned about something more serious? Fyi i just had a Colonoscopy and endoscopy and those were normal.

Anorexia

Hi,
Welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service.

Your history of fall, rib pain or PVCs is not a cause of your lack of appetite.

Usually, an underactive liver is a cause of anorexia but as your blood work is normal, that has been ruled out.

You told that you are suffering from generalized anxiety syndrome hence I can make it out as the cause of your lack of appetite.

Continue having Buspirone which is a good anti-anxiety drug and with the course of treatment, as the blood levels of it are achieved, your appetite will improve. Just avoid overthinking.

Also go for relaxation techniques, stress management, belly breathing, and psychological counseling. You would improve very soon.

Hope this answers your query.

I forgot one thing. I have this weird taste and dryness in my mouth as well. Could the hormonal bit and anxiety cause this too.

Brief Answer:
Dry mouth and weird taste of mouth due to medication

Detailed Answer:
Antidepressants and other psychiatric medication are the commonest drugs that are known to cause a metallic taste in addition to antibiotics, vitamins,Blood pressure medications and Antihistamine medications.
Buspar (buspirone) has other side effects like nausea, dry mouth, dizziness, headache and restlessness.
So you are having dry mouth and weird mouth taste, not as a part of disease but as a result of your medication.
Drink more water,
Try various spices, ginger and lemon. They have strong and lasting taste.
Avoid smoking.
Keep a good oral hygiene.
Chew sugar-free chewing gums / eat sugar-free mints.

Stay healthy and stay blessed.
