Question: I have afib, and a murmur. I'm 78 year old female. I was diagnosed at 71 . My Cardiologist wants me to start taking Eliquis,I'm reluctant to take it. I also take pacerone, synthroid, paroxitine, toprol and atorvastatin. Are there drug interactions with any of these meds ? How safe is Eliquis ? Possible side effects ?

Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on Ask a Doctor service!

I passed carefully through your question and would explain that there are no significant clinical interactions between eliquis and your current therapy.

So, it is Ok to take it concomitantly with your therapy.

It's main adverse effects are increased bleeding risk, which is a common adverse effect of all blood thinners.

I would just recommend checking your renal function tests in order to make the proper dose adjustement if needed.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

I was told that Eliquis is a one dose fits all therapy? No blood testing as with Warfarin ? I read something about interactions with Paxil ?? Yes, no ? Can I take the Eliquis with my meds ? I take my Paxil and Amiodorone in the morning, the Toprol,Atorvastatin, and Synthroid at bedtime. The Eliquis is one pill twice a day. How does the Eliquis work ? I can't remember all that was said about it ? Are you a Cardiologist ?

Hello again!

I understand your concern and agree with you that it may have some interaction between paxil and Eliquis, as they increase both anticoagulation, thus increasing the risk of bleeding.

But, this interaction of Eliquis, is will all SSRI drugs (paxil, sertraline, etc.).

It is true that there is no need to check INR levels (like when taking warfarin) to adjust Eliquis dose, but the dose of Eliquis should be lowered in chronic renal patients or older patients. There are no need for dose adjustements time after time, like with warfarin.

It should be taken twice daily, because it has a shorter half life compared to warfarin and other anticoagulants.

Its main action is the inhibition of Factor Xa, which is an important protein in the physiolocal reactions which lead to blood clotting.

So, basically it inhibits blood clotting.

In my opinion, you can take all these drugs concomitantly.

As paxil and Eliquis together may increase the risk of bleeding, I would recommend reduce the dose of Eliquis if bleeding (nasal bleeding or in the skin) occurs.

You shoould discuss with your doctor on these issues.

Hope to have clarified some of your uncertainties!

Kind regards,
