Question: I have a headache that starts at the base of the neck. More on the left side and wraps around to the front - goes behind the left ear and up over the left eye. Ibuprofen does seem to help with the pain. I noticed it start after a workout class. Just thought I had strained a muscle. Been going on about a week.

Brief Answer:
Your symptoms seem to be related to occipital neuralgia.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your symptoms seem to be related to occipital neuralgia.

One of the common causes is neck tension or tight neck muscles.

So, I recommend to use an anti-inflammatory cream such as Voltaren cream for local application.

I also recommend using anti-inflammatory medication such as Naproxen 500 mg twice a day.

Warm compresses at the neck area can relieve the muscle tension.

Gentle stretching exercises may also be helpful.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Brief Answer:
Occipital neuralgia can last for hours or days.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again dear,

Occipital neuralgia can last for hours or days.

It depends on what is triggering it.

In your case it will last as long as the neck muscles are tightened.

I suggest to follow the advice that I give above for a faster relief.

Take care dear,
