I Had An MRI For My Prostate Last Week -given

Question: I had an MRI for my prostate last week -given an intro venous chemical during the session. a couple of days later I've had severe itching-red bumps especially on my arms and legs. Thought they might be insect bites or bed bugs but not he case. The itching doesn't go away for 1 week now. Hydrocortisone and Benadryl doesn't help. I feel it might be internal. I've never had allergies. Could it be related to the chemical used in the MRI? I looked up sites that say gadolinium is used a lot and may have side effects, even though the blood test given right before showed my kidneys were OK.. I have had to scratch so much I have little scabs allover my arms and legs. Never had this problem before and the MRI is the only thing that was different from my daily routine etc.

Thanks for using the Ask a Doctor service.

You possibly had contrast (gadolinium) injected into your veins during the procedure. You could be allergic to the contrast and the itching may or may have been linked to this contrast but in that case it was more likely to have responded to the antiallergics and hydrocortisone. A closer look is therefore needed. It is possible that you are suffering from a fungal infection. Could you please upload an image of the affected areas? I will guide you accordingly.
