Brief Answer:
Blood in mucus requires proper evaluation and treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Ms Cobb,

Welcome to Ask A Doctor service.

I have read your query carefully and understand your concern.

Blood in mucus is significant, it maybe due to worsening infection (most likely in your case) or it could indicate other conditions such as tuberculosis or a malignant growth.

I strongly recommend you to consult a pulmonologist at the earliest and get yourself examined and you will need to get an X-ray of the chest, and High resolution CT scan of the chest to rule out any growth or tuberculosis.

The treatment options depend on the accurate diagnosis of the condition first.

If it is pneumonia(Infection), then IV antibiotics are needed after hsopitalisation.

If it is tuberculosis, the treatment includes anti TB medicines for a minimum of 6 months.

If it is due to a tumour, then the treatment depends on local and distant spread of the tumour and the type of tumour. It may include surgical resection of the tumour supplemented with chemotherapy.

There are other conditions to consider such a fungal infection of the lungs, or a bacterial abscess inside the lungs, or it could just be a severe throat infection, all of these can only be ascertained after a proper clinical examination in person and requisite investigations such as X-Ray, CT scan and throat swab culture and sensitivity.

I hope this answers your query, feel free to write back if you need any clarification.

Wishing you speedy recovery.

Best wishes.
