Question: I am planning to start using a tandem pump. With my Dexcon G6.. I read that …”insulin sensitivity factor (ISF) or “correction factor” is how much one unit of insulin is expected to lower blood sugar” is important with the pump… I tried to find more info at the tandem website. No luck… my question? Does the standard of care include determining the ISF. Before starting to use the pump. Is the tandem g6 a closed loop system?

Brief Answer:
Tandem pump

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to Ask A Doctor service.

I must say that this is more of a technical question and I had to go through a few latest research articles to better answer your queries.

Regarding first query:
Yes
To determine basal and bolus doses of a tandem pump, factors like wearer's total daily dose, correction factor and carbohydrate factor are considered in one way or another. Correction factor is calculated on the basis of insulin sensitivity and some other factors.
Relative insulin sensitivity is important but can be easily known by dividing expected total daily dose by actual total daily dose in the wearer.

Regarding your second query:
Tandem pump can be used in combination with Dexcon G6 as a closed loop system. Currently its a newer model and requires more studies to know its pros and cons.

Hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.
