I Am Currently Sick With A Upper Respiratory Infection .

Question: I am currently sick with a upper respiratory infection. I had a chest x-ray yesterday. We have been able to see the radiology write up which notes “ coarse interstitial thickening” (on both sides but slightly more on one side). I am unable to see my doctor until next week but am concerned about what this means. Please are you able to explain what this means and what (if any) further action needs to be taken.

Brief Answer:
Wait for your doctor appointment.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor's service.
I read your query and here is my advice.

The coarse interstitial thickening means that you are having a lung disease that causes scaring of the lungs which can progressively can cause scaring and difficulty for alveoli to be opened and transmit oxygen to blood.
It can be caused by long term exposure to chemicals such asbestos ,silica etc, autoimmune diseases, scleroderma, arthritis etc.
You should continue the treatment with antibiotics, nebulizer, inhaler and wait for your appointment.
It isn't a condition which needs immediate medical attention or ER. You can continue your treatment without anything to be added and wait for doctor appointment. I think you should get reevaluated after finishing treatment. Corticosteroids may be used.

Hope I have answered the question.

I was diagnosed with pneumonia and given the X-ray, but my doctor never called to follow up. The X-ray showed no fluid but the coarse interstitial thickening. Should it go away after my treatment?

Brief Answer:
You should get evaluated after treatment.

Detailed Answer:
I don't think the antibiotics treatment and nebulizer and inhaler can treat coarse interstitial thickening.
Oral corticosteroids may be used. You should get evaluated after you get treated the upper respiratory tract infection .
Other tests may be needed such bronchoscopy.
