Question: I am 68, 6-6 tall, 215 lbs and generally in good health. My blood pressure is normal and I check it regularly. I do have a minor case of varicose veins and they have been ultrasounded and were not considered to be a significant issue. I am experiencing a bit of swelling and pitting edema in my feet, the undersides of them feel like I am walking with cardboard taped to the soles, and they also feel tingly and sometimes a bit numb. I also think I might be sweating a bit more than in the past, and might be feeling a bit of reduced energy as well. This problem has come on slowly and a year ago I went to a doctor here in Panama and had a lengthy set of tests done. Nothing wrong was found. I have also had an EKG done which was normal.

I am concerned about the possible progression of this, whatever it is and would like to try and find a cause and a solution but am mystified.

I have a family history of old-age diabetes,

Brief Answer:
Probably peripheral neuropathy, follow the advice below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I already reviewed the attached report.

The symptoms seem to be related to peripheral neuropathy.

The most common cause is diabetes.

I recommend to do some examinations to confirm the diagnosis.

I suggest:

A glycemic level

A glycated hemoglobin level to exclude diabetes

Regular measurement of the blood pressure.

Meanwhile, I suggest using anti-inflammatory medication such as Ibuprofen 400 mg three tablets a day.

I also recommend to continue taking diuretics in the morning to relieve the swelling and edema.

After the examination you can contact me again for further evaluation.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
