Posted on Sun, 29 Dec 2019
Question: I am 5 weeks pregnant and trying to quit nicotine. I use a vape, not traditional cigarettes. I realize quitting all together is ideal. I have cut down tremendously, equivalent to about 3/4 cigarettes a day in nicotine. I%E2%80%99m most concerned with increasing my miscarriage chances. Is a small amount of nicotine at this stage in pregnancy a cause for miscarriage?

Brief Answer:
Smoking doesn't increase miscarriage chances.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome 'Ask a Doctor' service.
I read your query and here is my advice.

There is no evidence that smoking 3 to 4 cigarettes per day can increase the risk of miscarriage.
Nicotine can increase the risk of preterm birth, low birth weight of babies, can affect lung development, brain development due to its toxic effects and impairing blood oxygenation but it is not known to cause miscarriage.

You should stop taking nicotine or smoking because it is the best for you and baby and the best way is to stop it at once and don't use vaping.

Hope I have answered the question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
