I Am 24 Yrs Old Female. I Was Suffering From
Rabeprazole-TWICA A DAY
Detailed Answer:
Hi....
Welcome to Ask a doctor.
I am Dr Ajeet XXXXXXX
Rabeprazole has a wide margin of safety, overdose is uncommon and it is safe to take for long times.Even, no clinical signs or symptoms have been reported which are associated with any reported overdose.
Treatment protocol for eradication of Helicobacter pylori bacteria is 20mg of Rabeprazole twice a day in combination with two antibiotics.
Treatment protocol of active gastroesophageal reflux is 20mg once daily for 4-8 weeks. If the symptoms persist, then 20mg twice daily(total 40mg per day) is usually used for further 4 weeks.
Patients with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome have been treated with up to 120 mg rabeprazole per day.
If we take rabeprazole for over many years, magnesium levels in the body may fall and there may be defects in body metabolism.
So,don't worry at all.No untoward effects have been caused.
Hope that I have answered your query. If you have any doubts, please let me know.
Stay healthy and stay blessed.
Regards.
Thanks for your kind reply.
My last question on this issue would be Will i develop any dependence/addiction/habit with this drug...meaning my problem may come back soon
after stopping the usage of the drug.
Please respond.
With warm regards
PPI DEPENDANCE.
Detailed Answer:
Hi....
Yes...unfortunately you will.
This has been seen that proton pump inhibitors like rabeprazole are over prescribed and are habit forming
New researches suggest that though PPIs are highly effective treatments for acid re flux symptoms, but taking prescribed dosages of the drugs for just a few months can lead to dependency,
Patients with acid re flux symptom such as heartburn, bloating, indigestion, or acid regurgitation, got relieved by PPI but developed such symptoms again and with a more severe intensity then before, after they were discontinued. This forced the patients to further restart the PPIs to get rid of the symptoms, and at times at a higher dose thus causing long term dependence.
Actually research has proved that withdrawal from proton pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy is associated with a clinically meaningful increase in acid production above pre-treatment levels.
I see many patients in my clinic (usually in geriatric age group) who have been taking PPI for many years and this is really very difficult to convince them to get rid of them.
The unintended consequence s of PPI abuse for long term may include...
Magnesium deficiency, increased susceptibility to pneumonia, clostridium difficile diarrhea, bone fractures, vitamin B12 deficiency, physiological shut down of gastric acid secretion causing digestion aberrations etc.
So...though PPI are the wonder drugs for APD and usually used as first line, they should only be USED sparingly and should not be ABUSED.Rather go for diet and life style changes,antacids,H2 blockers like ranitidine.
