How Soon After A Vaginal Delivery Can One Resume Physical Activities?

Question: When is it best to resume light exercise after a vaginal delivery.
I have read conflicting reports of some saying 15-17 days where as others saying 45 days.
I would like to understand when my wife would be able to resume light exercise such as slow walking.

Brief Answer:
She may resume waking as long as she feels well enough

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and I hope i can help you today.

If the delivery was uncomplicated, women can resume normal activities as soon as they feel well enough and desire to do so.
The female body is designed for natural childbirth, and while she may be still experience vaginal bleeding, light exercise is healthy for recovery of her muscle
tone and strength.

The only restriction generally recommended is to avoid sexual activity until 6 weeks after delivery to ensure the vagina and uterus are recovered to a non-pregnant state.

So if your wife feels well and desires to exercise, there is really no reason that she cannot, especially if she was active before the birth.

I hope I was able to adequately answer your question today and that my advice was helpful. If I can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best wishes,

Dr. Brown
