How Long Will Suprax Oral Suspension Take To Show Improvement In A Four-year-old?

Question: Hello, during the early part of this week I was noticing that my four year old daughter was crying when she needed to urinate. Yesterday in addition to her crying, I noticed her urinating more frequently than usual. I checked her temperature and she had a very low grade fever. I took her to our doctor. They checked her urine sample and said there were a small number of white blood cells. At that point her temperature was normal. Our doctor sent her sample to the lab but the results have not returned yet.

Given her symptoms our doctor decided to treat her with 50ML Suprax Oral Susp 100mg/5ml (Cefixime 100mg/5mL). She is to take 6ml each day for 5 days. She had a dose yesterday and one a couple of hours ago. She is not crying as often when she needs to urinate today and says it is not hurting as much, but at other times she complains a little. Her temperature is 99.2F right now.

She is otherwise healthy and this is her first UTI.

I was just wondering approximately how long it will take for the medication to show improvement? If she still has symptoms and fever tomorrow or Saturday should I take her back to the clinic? We are heading into a long weekend here and our clinic has reduced hours so I am hoping she will feel better soon.
Thank you!

Hi Dr. Goldstein,
Thank you very much for answering my question. I will see how she is tomorrow and if she is still symptomatic I will take her back to the clinic on Saturday. At least by that time she will have had 3 doses (more than half) of her medication by then.
Is there anything I should look for in the meantime that may be of concern?
Thanks again!

Brief Answer:
UTI

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

It sounds like your doctor has done everything correctly so far. Anytime I start a child on antibiotic for any reason, I typically tell the parents to give it 2-3 days before we see improvement. The 99.2 fever is not really concerning. And it seems, although we are not totally sure, that her symptoms are improving.

I would see where she is at after 24 hours. If the improvement continues, we can leave her alone. If she is still even a little symptomatic on Saturday, it is worth a call to your doctor. In any case, it is always a good idea, after a few days of treatment, to repeat the urine tests to make sure all of the bacteria have been cleared.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
