How Long Does Minocycline Remain In The System?

default
Posted on Wed, 27 Jul 2016
Question: I have been taking minocycline for 7 weeks.
How long does minocycline stay in your system and continue to work?
I have been thinking of going off of this medication.
However, my dermatologist wishes for me to stay on this medication since I take one pill/day - 100 mg.
Thank you

Brief Answer:
"Half life" of minocycline is 15 hours on average.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

The antibiotic minocycline does not stay in your system for extended periods. It's "half life", meaning the time it takes for your body to eliminate half of it, is 15 hours on average. So in a day or two, any effective amount will be out of your system.

In 15 hours from stopping, 50 mg would be left.
In 30 hours, 25 mg would be left.
In 45 hours, 12.5 mg would be left.
In 60 hours, about 6 mg would be left.
