How Long Do The Nasal Passages Take To Heal Post Nasal Surgery?

Question: Hello Doctor,

I had sinusitus surgery in Dec 2013. Doctor mentioned that the left nasal flow was little blocked due to little deviation of the bone. Since the surgery happened that area is little bit soft, so any time I have dry mucus stuck around that area and I try to remove it I get little blood with it. Since last 2 days, there was lot of dry mucus stuck around that area and when I try to remove little bit more blood gets on to my finger. Also, when I spit the mucus from the mouth after trying to remove the dry mucus from nose, I get blood traces with Mucus (From Mouth).
I am little concerned if the blood traces in the mucus from mouth is something to be worried about or if it is just due to the dry mucus which gets stuck in the nose and as I try to remove, it scratches the soft area in the nose and gets blood traces on it.

Brief Answer:

There is no cause for worry. Use saline nasal drops.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

1. Initial healing after nasal surgery takes 4 to 6 weeks. Internal healing can take up to 4 to 6 months. Hence these symptoms require direct exsmination and s nasal endoscopy to look for the underlying cause.

2. There is no cause for worry with a little bleeding after scraping away nasal crusts or after forceful nose blowing. Regular use of saline nasal drops and washes will help relieve the symptoms.

3. À nasal examination, nasal endoscopy, plain CT imaging, nasal swab for culture should be done. You can post the reports and images here for further treatment advice.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Hello Doctor,

Thanks for the advice.
So this means the blood traces those are coming from the mouth with the sputum/mucus is not to be worried about and could be due to the blood that comes due to scraping away the nasal crusts from the location where I had the Sinusitus surgery in past?
Also, just little curious if I would need to use any specific Saline Nasal drop considering I had sinusitus surgery in the past or I can go ahead and use any saline nasal drop available over the counter?
Also, Just wanted to confirm if I can use saline nasal spray instead of drops?

Thanks & Regards,
Ashish

Hello Doctor,

Sorry to ask again but forgot to ask one more query. Little worried if it can be a sort of nasal infection like Staphylococcus aureus infection?

Thanks & Regards,

Brief Answer:

Details as discussed below.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

1. Nasomist or NasoClear saline nasal drops will help. You can also use Solspre or Nasowash.

2. I have recommended a nasal swab in my earlier answer to rule out any infection.

Hope I have answered your query.

Take care
