How Can One Get Their Elevated AST And ALT Levels Down To Normal?

default
Posted on Thu, 3 Feb 2022
Question: My husband has prostate and bone cancer....which is, as much as possible "under control". In March he had a heart attack. A stent was inserted and he felt well. Suddenly AST & ALT levels went to 1980 and 1316. The Dr took him off statins and the levels went down to 44 each in May.
Last week's levels were ALT 345 and AST 259. The only change has been the addition of Hydrocodone-Acetaminophen 5-325. Could this have caused the increase in enzyme levels? He takes one at nighttime...never more. His PSA is 0.53...credited to Xtandi..160 mg daily. Once a month he gets an injection of Xgeeva which is I believe a bone fortifier. Do you have any suggestions as to how we can get the AST and ALT levels down to normal? (He had gall bladder surgery in 2014...and still passes small stones

Brief Answer:
Ursodeoxycholic acid group of drugs

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Since your husband is suffering from prostate cancer which has spread to bones and his PSA is now under control with treatment but his ALT and AST has gone up i would advise him to stop hydrocodone-acetaminophen

Acetaminophen combined with hydrocodone combinations have become a common cause of acetaminophen acute liver injury

You need to give your husband ursodeoxycholic acid group of drugs twice daily for 4 weeks in order to bring his liver enzymes down.

You can consult your local doctor regarding this
