Brief Answer:
You have to repeat your blood sugar estimation report.

Hello,
Welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service.
Myself Dr. Parth. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your blood sugar level was suddenly elevated.
Based on this one finding no further comment can be given.
Sometimes exercise can release stress hormones like adrenaline. These hormones can lead to increase blood sugar temporary right after exercise.

The second possibility includes the wrong report by some machine/clerical error.

I'd suggest you repeat your blood sugar estimation next day morning after taking rest and 8-hours of fasting.

Hope I have answered your question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

I guess what I’m curious about is how a workout with weights could cause BG to rise so drastically when no sugar or carbs have been ingested. What is the underlying physiological mechanism that causes this to occur?

Brief Answer:
The physiological mechanism is by release of stress hormone.

Detailed Answer:
Hello welcome back to the Ask A Doctor,
I have reviewed your query and here is my advise.

In heavy workout, body muscles need more glucose.During workout there is release of stress hormone like adrenaline and cortisone. They can release more glucose from liver into blood. Sometime all glucose might not be utilized, so can lead elevation of glucose transiently right after exercise.

Second possible mechanism could be insulin resistance. In such case glucose utilization might not occur as insulin sensitivity decreased. For that you can investigate with HOMA index and serum insulin estimation.

Lastly it can be some mistake in instrument used for gluocise estimation or clerical error.

So I suggest you to repeat glucose estimation as mentioned in my previous answer.

Hope I have answered your question.
Best regards. Dr Parth
