Hi There I Have Had Back Ache For Approximately Three

Question: Hi there I have had back ache for approximately three years now ever since I had pneumonia. Not sure if this is related or not. I have lost feeling in most of my upper back as in I've got no sensation when getting a massage or if pressure is been placed on me. (I get my daughter to stand on me to ease my pain and she weighs 60kg and I dont feel a thing? Yet my back is a constant dull ache and discomfort all the time. If that makes sense? And now a couple of days ago I have hurt my lower back and I'm getting Sharpe shooting pains all the way down my back and buttocks area. I can't get up out of bed as I'm in agony. I've had blood in my urine and have bloated tummy and swollen ankles and feel so tired and lethargic not sure if all these symptoms are related or separate.

Brief Answer:
Two separate issues, further evaluation is necessary.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to the “Ask a Doctor “ service.

I have read your question.

These are two separate issues, the back ache and the loss of the sensation on your back may indicate compression on the nerves or the spinal cord at the thoracic spine level, sharp pain and blood in the urine with swollen ankles may indicate a damaged kidney since there was trauma too.

I think, you should address both these issues but the recent one needs instant assessment with a clinical evaluation by your Doctor and tests such as urinalysis, ultrasound of the abdomen and kidneys.

An MRI of the thoracic and lumbar spine also should be reserved in order to get a correct diagnosis of back ache and loss of the sensation cause.

Treatment depends on the diagnosis.

Discuss with your Doctor these issues.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Let me know if I can assist you further.
