Question: Hi there. I have had a bad cough for the last 5 days. The mucus is clear to light yellow. I was lethargic for the first 2-3 days. No fever. Just started to feel congested in my nasal passage this morning.
Now I have pain on the right side of my chest - feels like a muscular pain, when I cough, mostly in the morning. Could be I slept on it bad.
Is it possible that I've coughed so much that I've pulled a chest muscle?
I think there is a respiratory virus going around - not sure if this could be it?

Brief Answer:
Yes, coughing can cause musculoskeletal pain.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Ask a doctor forum.
I can understand your concern.
Yes, it is quite possible that you might be having musculoskeletal pain due to excessive coughing.
So apply warm water pad on affected areas of chest.
Avoid heavyweight lifting and strenuous exercise.
Avoid movements causing pain.
Take simple painkiller like paracetamol or ibuprofen.
Don't worry, you will be alright with all these.
For cough, you can take antihistamine like levocetrizine or fexofenadine.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.

Thank you doctor:)

And if I cough up some clear mucus with a tinge of blood? is that bad? or is ok for now?

It's not a lot of blood, like streak of blood I think from the coughing?

Brief Answer:
No worries at present.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on Ask a doctor forum.
If blood is very little like you mentioned then no need to worry.
But if blood persist or increased in amount then you should definitely consult doctor and get done chest x ray to rule out lung infection.
