Mother of one young child aged 4

In 2016 i had a left ovarian cyst that had grew to 10cm and was surgically removed after the birth of my daughter.

I now have a dermoid cyst on my right ovary that is 1.8cm in diameter.

My gynaecologist thinks everything is ok

I’m pregnant in early stages. But very worried google says if left untreated it could turn into cancer .

Brief Answer:
Dermoid cysts are usually benign

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using 'Ask a Doctor'. Dermoid ovarian cysts, also known as mature teratomas, are the most common ovarian tumor in women in their teens or 20's, and almost always are benign (not cancerous). They rarely can turn into cancer, and the risk factors for this are if you are older than 45 years old, the tumor is greater than 10 cm, or if it is growing rapidly.

So it would be recommended that this be removed, however, you will likely need to wait until after you delivery your baby to do this. The chances of it turning into cancer in that short time would be very low. It could be monitored with ultrasound while you are pregnant to make sure it is not growing too quickly; if there were concerns, surgery might be considered while you are pregnant, but I would think this would be very rare.

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any other questions about that, and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.

Thank you doctor last year it measured 1.6cm this year it’s measuring 1.8cm . Would you consider this a fast growth?

My left ovarian dermoid cyst that was removed in 2016 was growing rapidly but I had no symptoms.

Do these type of cysts normally grow ? Or grow fast ?

Brief Answer:
That growth is normal

Detailed Answer:
You're very welcome. I would not consider the 0.2 cm to be rapid growth. If it doubled in size in that year, I would consider that more concerning.

These dermoid cysts do occur on both sides sometimes. It does sound like the cyst on your left side was large and grew quickly, though that does not necessarily mean it was cancerous (as I assume they confirmed after they took it out).

They are expected to grow, and I would consider growth from 1.6 cm to 1.8 cm in a year to be within the expected range of normal growth.

Please let me know if you have any other questions, I'd be glad to help any way I can.

Yes there was a report after the surgery I will attach the picture below once I receive it.

I have another question Dr. is it possible to have a right side groin area strain after an awkward position during intercourse? Would this be a normal strain or can I be related to my ovary?

I only feel pain when I walk with my right leg .
It Began two days ago (after the awkward position of intercourse) but today it’s almost gone

Brief Answer:
Sounds like normal strain

Detailed Answer:
Yes, when you get the report, go ahead and send it, I'd be glad to take a look at it.

If you only have the pain when you are walking, and it's getting better, it sounds like a muscle strain and I wouldn't think that it is related to your ovary at all. Pain from the ovary would typically be more constant, and not be related to activity so much. So yes, I would say it is very possible and probably that you strained a muscle.

Thank you doctor. Yes it’s mainly felt when walking. While resting or laying / sitting I don’t feel it unless I touch it myself . It’s more the pubic bone/groin right side area that seems sore but is feeling much better than I did yesterday. I have attached the report below and would like your help in understanding if it is a good outcome

Brief Answer:
Mature teratoma

Detailed Answer:
Yes, fortunately, the tumor showed to be a mature teratoma, with no signs of being anything else, in particular, no signs of cancer. It was completely benign.

Thank you for your time doctor. I really appreciate your quick responses . Is there anything you recommend to completely stay healthy or possibly detox my body from any toxins ?

Brief Answer:
You're welcome

Detailed Answer:
You're very welcome, I'm glad I could help. No, if you don't have any other health problems, I wouldn't recommend doing any of that, especially while you are pregnant. I would only want to make sure you are on a prenatal vitamin that includes folic acid. Otherwise you should be fine.
