Hi I'm Getting A Right Total Hip Replacement And A

default
Posted on Sat, 3 Aug 2019
Question: Hi I'm getting a right total hip replacement and a SPLATT surgery on the same foot on the same day on July 24th. I'm 41 years old and I have a mild case of Cerebral Palsy. I can walk independently without devices. I was at the Express Care yesterday in my area and the doctor noticed I have 2 ingrown toe nails on the foot I need a hip replacement on and the SPLATT foot surgery on. Will the Orthopedic surgeon still be able operate on me with having ingrown toe nails? It's obvious I have ingrown toe nails because of the club foot. Also what are the chances of me walking independently without devices after the hip replacement surgery? I believe I'm getting a Ceramic hip replacement. I'm getting the hip replacement surgery done at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital.

Brief Answer:
Still have time to treat ingrown toenail till operation day, see below

Detailed Answer:
Hello

I am sorry for the health problems you are facing.

Now, as you have club foot, the SPLATT procedure will try to correct the tendons problems.

Now you have ingrown toenail on that foot. Your operation is on 24th today's is 13th. There are still 10 days ahead enough to ease and correct somehow the ingrown toenail prior to surgery.

Of course, you need to be consistent in following the steps for treating ingrown toenail.

I usually advise to my patients with the same problem as yours to:
1. wash the feet well with warm water and unscented soap. Rinse well.
2. Soak foot on a mixture of warm water and half cup of apple cider vinegar for at least 15 min. Then dry well.
3. Apply hydrogen peroxide on the ingrown toenail
4. Then apply triple antibiotic ointment
5. Sometimes applying nail brace can help,

It should be improving hopefully. However can discuss this further with your orthopedic surgeon who can help you further until the day of hip surgery.

Hope this helps. Do write me back if you have any other concern.

Regards,
Dr.Albana Sejdini
