Question: Hi, I just received my annual health checkup report. There were a few alerts in them.

My question is specifically on alert raised on eGFR. In 2018 it was 88 and this year 78. Any recommendation to improve it.

Online it does mention GFR is based on multiple factors but the report basis it only on creatinine (1.03 mg/dl) and age. I am 6'2" and 85 kgs. Race: XXXXXXX

Anything I need to do?

Thanks!

Brief Answer:
This GFR is not worrisome

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to Ask A Doctor service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

In the presence of normal creatinine, some deviation of eGFR is normal. You can avoid intake of any medicines especially those that affect kidney. Also you need to lower the dose of medicines that are excreted by kidney. How is your urinalysis? Is there protein or blood in urine? If the urinalysis is normal, then we can ignore this finding. If protein is found in urine exam then monthly GFR test needs to be repeated.

Also it need to be corelated with ultrasound KUB for any kidney issues like kidney stones.
In most cases drinking cleaner water helps flush out any stones etc. Keep a regualr check on fasting blood sugar and BP.

Hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hello Dr Vaishalee,

My BP levels are normal and I dont take any medication. The only reason I was concerned was that numbers dropped for last year to this year and I dont understand the significance of it.

I have uploaded the report. Please take a look. If there is nothing to worry I am good.

Thanks, Vijay

Brief Answer:
Still waiting for your report

Detailed Answer:
Hi again

The report is not attached.

However if the above mentioned parameters are normal, then I would not worry about eGFR reduction.

Brief Answer:
Its a normal report

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Its a normal report and doesnot show any evidence of any kidney problem. Although I wouldnot ignore low eGFR completely.

You may take your precautions.
I will also recommend to do this test (e-GFR is a calculation) from another laboratory just to cross-check.
I am also assuming that you donot have any symptoms of possible kidney problems like fluid retention, low urine output, kidney or back pain, etc.
