Question: Hi,
I have around 17 months old son and he is having fever since 3rd Oct. It started with mild fever b/w 100-101 on first day and does reach higher around 102-103 on second day with gradually down <100 on third day. We were following Crocin medication at an interval of every six hours (3 times a day) for three days along with forehead sponge (during high fever) and stopped medicine afterwards on 6th Oct afternoon.

However, on 4th day evening - it remains around 99.5 and then XXXXXXX to 101 today morning. He has been extremely uncomfortable and hardly eating except couple of spoons sporadically.

With it's being Sunday, we haven't been able to touch base doctor yet and planning to meet tomorrow morning at the earliest.

Would you be able to please advise if we can give any medicine today to help out for baby's relief?

Thanks,
Anoop Garg

Brief Answer:
Continue paracetamol, investigation will help

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for asking on this platform

I can understand your concern.
Most common cause of fever in this age is some viral infection. Usually viral infection is associated some other symptoms like cough, cold or loose motion. But here you have not mentioned any associated symptoms apart from poor feeing and irritability which can be due to fever itself.
Here I would like to continue paracetamol for fever when temperature is more than 99.5.
The activity will be better once fever decreases.
The frequency and severity of fever is decreased this is a good sign and goes more in favour of viral infection.
Sometimes even in viral fever it may take 4-5 days for fever to subside completely.
But as it has been more than 3 days of fever, I would like to get few blood tests like urine test, complete blood count, c reactive protein and procalcitonin level done to rule out bacterial infection. If it comes positive antibiotics will be needed. Otherwise the fever should subside with Conservative treatment like paracetamol only.
If you notice that irritability is persistent, fever is not subsiding, there is breathing difficulty or any other significant symptoms please consult your pediatrician immediately.
I hope this helps.
Please let me know if you have any more questions.
Regards
