Question: Hi I am wondering if I have sleep apnea. I have asymptomatic stenosis of one tricuspid valve that does not open all the way. I am very fit - I bike about 20 km a day - do strength exercise and kayak alot. I xc skied all winter. I wake up quite tired but after moving around and breakfast I feel good. I am not sleepy during the day. I checked my oximeter with an ambulance's and it is pretty close maybe 1 or 2 % less than the ambulance. I take no medications.

One night I used it I had 1 minute total below 88% during 6 events and another 24 sec total during 2 events my min was 85 % both nights. One night was 1% of 9 hrs so about 5.5 min below 90% .
thanks XXXXXXX

Hello!

Welcome to Ask a Doctor service!

I passed carefully through your question and would explain that your symptoms are not typical of sleep apnea.

The fact that you are fit and you are not sleepy during the day are two arguments that help exclude this disorder, as it is more common in overweight persons and it leads to increased sleepiness during the day.

Although, the episodes of low oxygen saturation during the night could be suggestive of this disorder.

Coming to this point, I would recommend performing a polysomnogram in order to investigate for this possible disorder. It is the golden standard test to help exclude this disorder and definitely put your mind to peace.

I don't think that the tricuspid valve stenosis has any implications in this clinical scenario, as you are fit and active, with no daily physical limitations.

Hope to have been helpful!
