Question: Hi, I am a 54-year-old XXXXXXX XXXXXXX woman going through menopause and heavy sweating and very bad change in body odor. I had blood work done and everything came back good except for below:
T4 was 1.55 (reference range 0.83 - 1.43),
TSH was 1.083 (reference range was 0.550 - 4.780 ulu/mL)

I was already taking 88mcg for about the last 6 years and then my doctor said it should be lowered to 75mcg. Do you agree with this change? Since changing dosage I've noticed that I have started to gain weight and I'm hungry now more than ever before. What could be happening?

Thanks
doctor

Brief Answer:
The dosis is Ok

Detailed Answer:
Hello
I have gone through your query and understood your concern.

Your TSH test result is within the range and this means that your levothyroxine dosis was Ok.

Increased appetite, weight gain, heavy sweating and body odor changes can be attributed to hormonal fluctuations that happens in menopause.

In these circumstances,a healthy diet, regular exercise, yoga or meditation ,drinking a lot of water and emotional stability are very important to ease your menopause symptoms.

About your thyroid hormone replacement therapy,88mcg/day is Ok for you.
I suggest to repeat TSH test after 6 weeks and let me know the result.

Hope this is helpful.
Wish you good health.

The doctor took me off the 88mcg and placed me on 75mcg claiming my t4 was too high now I'm gaining weight and this is not in my head. This is real....... why would she say that my numbers were not in normal range of your saying they were. What should I do? Is there anything I can do about all this sweating as well etc

Brief Answer:
HRT

Detailed Answer:
Hi again

Your last TSH result( 1.083 ) was within the reference range of lab(0.550 - 4.780 mU/L)
For this reason there is no need to adjust the dosis of your Synthroid.

About your menopause symptoms, i suggest to talk with your local doctor about hormone replacement therapy (HRT).
With this therapy you replace the estrogen that your body stops making during menopause and in this way you can find a solution for your menopause symptoms.

Meantime avoid all the triggers of excessive sweating like caffeine, spicy foods, alcohol, smoking and stress.

Hope i have answered to all your questions.
Best regards.

So, should I start back taking 88mcg instead of the 75mcg she started me on?

Thanks

Brief Answer:
88mcg.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Your TSH result is optimal for this reason both dosis,(75 and 88 mcg/day) can be Ok for you but
considering that since changing the dosage of your Synthroid,(from 88 to 75mcg/d) you've noticed weight gain ,i suggest to start back taking 88mcg/day.

It is necessary to repeat TSH test after 6 weeks to see if 88mcg/day is your optimal dose.

Hope i have clarified your doubts.
Wish you all the best.
