Hi Dr, My Wife Showed First Symptoms Of The Flu

default
Posted on Wed, 4 Mar 2020
Question: Hi Dr,
My wife showed first symptoms of the flu starting last Thursday afternoon, and we agreed I would sleep in a separate bedroom while she was sick. Her last fever was Saturday, but she still has an intermittent cough. It is now Wed night/Thurs morning. Is she still contagious? Am I ok to come back to the bed with her 6 1/2 days later? Or should we hold out for a few more days? Thank you,
doctor

Brief Answer:
Flu is contagious for about a week.

Detailed Answer:
Hi....
Welcome to "Ask a Doctor"service.
I am Dr Ajeet XXXXXXX

I have gone through your query and here is my opinion.

A flu patient is contagious from 1 day before the development of symptoms to one week after that.
Sometimes, this period might be even 10 days.

She might not be having a fever but as she is still having cough (and may be sneezes),so the risk of droplet transmission is still not fully over.

Even if she is feeling better,it is better to limit contact with her for next couple of days and practice hand hygiene and optimum healthy habits.
After all,an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Hope that I have answered your query.
If you have any doubts, please let me know.

Stay healthy and stay blessed.
Regards.
