Question: Hi Dr., My Son, 3 years old, has got fever last week and it got cured after using paracetamol for 3 days as per Dr. s suggestion. It has been 4 days that fever got cured. But his lips are dried and cut and he is not taking more water even after insisting several times. Can you suggest any cream/medicine for his dried lips? I am not sure if I can use adults lip balm for him. I have attached he image. Regards, Khadar

Brief Answer:
Apply a moisturising balm

Detailed Answer:
Hi Khadar,
I have gone through your query and have seen the picture

Probably he had a viral infection. Since the fever is gone, we need not worry about that.

Dryness and cracks on lips suggests Cheilitis, which is common after fever. Applying a moisturising balm 2-3 times a day will relieve the discomfort and promote healing. We can use plain petroleum jelly or special lip balm preparations are available for this(Sebolin, Vaseline are good XXXXXXX brands).

I also used to give a multivitamin preparation(Syrup A to Z or Syrup Becosules 5m once daily) for 2 weeks to promote recovery, especially if the child has a diet poor in vegetables and fruits. Also try to keep good hydration. You can give any fluids of his comfort, like milk, lassi or fruit juices rather than insisting on plain water.

Hope I have answered your query
