Question: Hi Doctor. I've been feeling sick for these past couple of days. The symptoms that I felt initially is a sudden chest discomfort, heartburn, and a weird dizzy effect which lasts just for (a) second when I move my head to a new direction or focus on something. Yesterday and today, the heartburn seems to go away, but I'm still feeling a chest discomfort accompanied by body heat. I've been drinking lots of waters but it problem still persists. Help would be appreciated, thanks!

Brief Answer:
At your age, GERD would be most likely

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using Ask a Doctor. Chest pain or discomfort with heartburn at any time would most likely be from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), especially at your age. Other causes of chest pain coming from your heart or lungs would be rare at your age, and musculoskeletal causes would usually be related to activity and not like what you are describing.

I would recommend avoiding any foods that can makes this worse, such as alcohol, spicy foods, caffeine, citrus fruits, tomato-based products, and chocolate, as well as use over the counter Pepcid or Prilosec for a few weeks to help decrease the acid in your stomach. If you are still having discomfort after this, you should probably be seen in person to make sure nothing else is going on and get started on stronger treatment.

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any questions about any of that, and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.

Hello Dr. XXXXXXX

Thanks for reply in such short notice, but I have to understand this - do heartburn usually lasts this long? I think it's starting to crawl itself to the one week period and the chest discomfort is still present. Although I have no breathing problems and I sleep okay, but what about the body heat on the other hand? I'm just incredibly confused on what's going on with the sudden appearances of these effects.

Brief Answer:
Heartburn can last several days to weeks

Detailed Answer:
Yes, heartburn can be constant for days to weeks, and patients sometimes do complain of body heat, along with nausea, bitter taste in their mouth, and sometimes cough. It doesn't sound like anything dangerous, so I would suggest trying to treat for GERD and see if there is a response, which will also help to determine what the cause is. If there is no improvement, there may be another cause, but I would be surprised if medication didn't help with these symptoms.

Please let me know if you have any other questions, I'd be glad to help any way I can.

Hello Dr. XXXXXXX

I'm glad I could get a clear head about this issue. But can I get some advice from you? Is medication often required, or I should just take in water and wait it out? I'm a lover of spicy and fried food, is there any way I can combat this issue without having to deal with heartburn after taking it? I'm not obese and I do a fair share of exercise, but GERD seems to be a problem when I'm trying to enjoy my delicacies. Plus, is stress a major contributor to GERD?

I would love to hear your advice about this issue. Thank you!

Brief Answer:
Probably not going to be able to avoid GERD with those foods

Detailed Answer:
You're welcome, I'm glad I can help. Other than avoiding those foods that exacerbate the reflux, there is not much you can do other than take antacids or other medications to help control it. You can always try to wait it out, but taking medication can help it to resolve quicker, and maybe once the inflammation has calmed down, you can better handle some of these foods in small quantities. And yes, stress can make GERD worse as well.
