Hey Doctor, For About A Week Now I’ve Been Waking

Posted on Tue, 29 Oct 2019
Question: Hey doctor,

For about a week now I’ve been waking up a lot earlier than usual. I seem to keep waking up at exactly 6:50am every day for the last week and then I’ve been finding it hard to get back to sleep and I’ve felt tired all week because of it. I’ve tried going to bed at all different times but I just seem to be waking up at that time each day. It happened after I had a really long, tiring and quite physically demanding work day last Sunday and every day after that I’ve had this problem. What exactly can I do to possibly remedy this? I’ve probably had this happened a few times in the past especially travelling overseas but it eventually went away after a week or two.

To get a rough idea I usually go to bed around 12-1am most days which is fairly late but I’d sleep to around 9am usually so I’d get around 8-9 hours sleep but now I’m getting 6-7 hours which is not enough for me.

Brief Answer:
Circadian rhythm adjustment takes time

Detailed Answer:
Hello... I understand your concern and this is called circadian sleep cycle adjustment.

Usually take one week to 2 weeks for complete adjustment.

Usually this will happen once the hormone secreted by the brain called melatonin gets adjusted, so that you can get adequate rest and this can take this long. I am explaining this so that you will be rest assured after knowing the physiological basis and also the management options.

Melatonin is available in a tablet form and I suggest you take 3 milligrams of that 1 hour before the sleep so that the sleep inducement is normal and you can get 8 hours of sleep at least.

This is a prescription medication and you will require a doctor's prescription for this please.

I am going to send you a useful link for your better understanding.

Hey doctor thanks for that this is some helpful info so you think if I just keep a more consistent bedtime schedule my sleeping rhythm will adjust back? Is it not odd that all of a sudden it just started happening? I’ve also started having sex for the first time in my life with a girl I’ve been seeing could it maybe be my hormones adjusting it started happening around the same time as well or could that be a coincidence?

Brief Answer:
Suggestions on sleep

Detailed Answer:
Yes please - I do not think anything serious is going on .
Sexual life does not have any implications on the sleep cycle please.
YOu need some time for the physiological circadian rhythm to get adjusted and then everything is going to be fine.
