Question: Hello i am a year old women who always had normal Mammograms until last year where i had a 3 mm complex cyst and some microcalcifications with fibro cystisc changes. I have had 2 Diagnostic mammogram every 6 months for a year and just had my Mammogram on 2/17/20. The results read as follows imaging surveillance of a tiny focus of probably benign microcalcifications in association with complicated cyst of left upper inner quadrant. there are no new suspicious on mammography. A 3mm focal asymmetry with numerous round microcalcifications at 11.00 periareolar is not changes on magnification views compared with 2/19. On sonography at 11.00 5mm from the nipple is a parallel , circumscribed 4mm simple cyst with absent vascularity. No solid or suspicious findings seen in the left upper inner periareolar area. Probrably benign findings, Microcalcifications and fibro cystisc changes stable for 1 year. I wanted to ask a breast surgeon or breast oncologist is this something to worry about and could this change into cancer down the road. Any help would be grateful. I am so nervous about this but everything seems to be fine the radiologist told me. Please answer with opions and suggestions

Brief Answer:
It seems to be a non-cancerous lesion.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query.

I have gone through your mammogram reports.

The given mammogram shows a lesion in your breast, which is more likely a benign (non-cancerous) lesion. The possibility of cancerous change is very very unlikely.

As of now, just follow up is required. If the size is increasing, you can go for an ultrasound-guided fine needle biopsy to confirm the tissue diagnosis.

Hope I have answered your query.
Thanks

The lesion is the cyst ,or the asymmetry,or the microcalcifications? Sorry for the questions but you are a surgeon is watching it a good thing to do. Also why does microcalcifications happen with fibro cystic changes and is the mammogram saying it is that or microcalcifications with the cyst. Or both Please explain.Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Calcification is more important.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Microcalcification is more important. Microcalcifications result from the calcium deposits within the breast tissue. It can deposits over the cystic lesions because of inflammation and age related wear and tear.
In your case there is no increase or change in size over the last one year and no features suggestive of cancerous change. So nothing much to worry and follow up is required.
You can also consider an ultrasound guided fine needle biopsy(FNAC).
thanks

Can these microcalcifications increase and if they do what does that mean. Also they are round is this a good thing. Can they turn to cancer .So I went back to my 6th month report and on 8/2019 and it said comparison from 2/19 and2/18 and thru 2/14 and reads this There has been no significant change or size or appearance of a 3mm oval nodule with round microcalcifications in the left 11.00 periareolar position as compared with the prior exam of 2/19. In retrospect this lesion was present in 2/17 but developed more calcifications since then.No other abnormalities are seen in the left breast.

Brief Answer:

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Microcalcification can develop as a part of inflammation and age related wear and tear.
In your case there is no significant increase in size, which is in favour of hamlets lesion and unlikely of a cancerous change.
Also if it is associated with early cancer, it will be irregular in shape and many features like spiculation and architectural distortion will be there. In your case it is a benign(non cancerous) round one.
Nothing much to worry and routine followup only is required.
Thanks

Brief Answer:
The odds for cancerous change is very unlikely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
The probability of cancerous change is very unlikely.
No need to worry about breast cancer, because it is a potentially curable disease if detected at an early stage.
You can continue your followup mammogram.
Hope I have answered your query.
Thanks
