Question: Hello doctor, please read my query carefully i really need help. I have very very very severe OCD i know that you will refer me to a psychologist but please answer my question within your speciality. I have great fear of all forms of cancer, and my body started reacting to this fear and on everything. For exemple when i do a compulsion by saying a word: a part of my body start to pinch or hurt and an idea of mutations occuring in this organ to cause cancer, so i have to repeat the word correctly and without having this pain and this idea (genes mutations) and the fear of cancer otherwise i will get cancer in that organ in the future. Last time i was doing a compulsion, repeating a sentence many times because every time i repeat it my pancreas start hurting (my body react to this everytime i repeat the sentence by hurting my pancreas because of the fear of pancreatic cancer). If i don't repeat the sentence without my pancreas hurts or pinch i will get pancreatic cancer because this extreme fear everytime i say the sentence will cause DNA and genes damages and mutations in my pancreas because of this pressure that i did on it (by repeating the word everytime and my pancreas react to it by hurting). I know that it is complexe doctor for you to understand this things that happen to me but thus is the idea that i have. My questions are: 1) When i repeat a sentence many time with the fear of pancreatic cancer and my pancreas start to react with this fear and hurt, does this cause DNA and genes damages and mutations in a direct way??? 2) Does an idea (getting pancreatic cancer if i dont repeat the sentence without having pancreas reactions to it (pain)) has the power to affect the DNA and genes negativelly in my pancreas and cause cancer? 3) When i repeat this sentence many time with the idea of getting pancreatic cancer does this do pressure on my pancreas cells (especially that like i said it interract with the sentence everytime i repeat it by starting hurting and pinching) and this cause DNA and genes mutations and pancreatic cancer? 4) Does mutations in pancreas genes and DNA occur because of thoughts and extreme fear for few minutes in a direct way (like my case here repeating the sentence many times accompanying by pancreas reaction to it). 5) Does my pancreas reaction when i repeated the sentence many times (it starts hurting every time i repeat it) cause DNA and genes damages and mutations?? 6) When i repeated the sentence many times with the fear of pancreatic cancer and my pancreas react to this fear, does this do a pressure on the genes and DNA of the cells in my pancreas and cause damages and mutations? 7) Do i need MRI for my pancreas in the future (after several years for example) to see if this situation caused me a mutation or many mutations in genes and DNA of my pancreatic cells? Please doctor answer my quesions. I am sorry to make this long.

Brief Answer:
Absolutely no need to worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
I have gone through your query in detail and understand your concern.

But, all the worries you mentioned are absolutely baseless and scientifically not possible. Our thoughts or words can not affect our genes in anyway. It can not cause a disease to an organ either through gene mutation or any other ways. Stay relaxed. Anyhow, for completion sake, I will answer your query one by one number-wise:

1. When you repeat a sentence(with or without thinking of a particular disease), it can not cause gene damage or mutation
2. No ideas have the power to affect our DNA or genes
3. It can not cause pressure on pancreatic cells, DNA damage, mutation or cancer
4. Mutation or DNA damage can never happen as a result of extreme thoughts or fears.
5. Pancreas does not react to our thoughts or sentences. It is involved in digestion and metabolism
6. Such sentences or thoughts can not cause pressure or damage to DNA
7. You do not need MRI or any other tests for this.

Stay relaxed.

If these fears keeps on hunting you, kindly take the help of a psychiatrist. All that is needed here are mental and emotional support, supportive counselling and sometimes drugs to alleviate the fears.
I hope this answer will help
Wishing you good health
Regards, Dr Aslam.
