Question: Hello doctor,

My name is XXXXXXX 27 years old, male. Recently I was diagonized with Bacterial infection - Enterococcus Faecalis in my semen analysis. I had given with Ampicilin 1000mg, 3 times per day for one week.
The doctor has asked me to come for the bacterial test with semen sample.
Question:

1. Usually after how long after the Antibiotic course one should produce the sample for reliable test results?
2. My wife also 27 years was also tested positive for infection using vaginal swab and was identified with Enterococcus Faecalis+ E.Coli. She was prescribed with Ampicilin orally and Fluomycin as a vaginal suppository + Vagiflora for 10 days. What is the time span she had to wait before she can give the vaginal swab for testing again?

Thanks

Brief Answer:
5-7 days after treatment for you and your wife.

Detailed Answer:
Good day and thank you for being with healthcare magic!

It would be advisable to get another semen culture and vaginal swab 5-7 days after the treatment. There are no guidelines to follow on these but in my practice this is what I advice my patients.

There are several ways to decrease infection related to intercourse. Washing before and after and urinating before and after would decrease the bacterial load for each genital organ.

I hope I have answered your question satisfactorily.

Brief Answer:
if relapse, it would be better to change the antibiotic

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for the follow-up question.

If there is relapse for infection and if the bacteria is still the same one , it would be better to change the antibiotic. But of course this would depend on the culture result initially.

If there is suspicion of prostatitis the antibiotics would be extended up to one month.

Changing an antibiotic or continuing an antibiotic would be determined by numerous of factors and would be determined by the clinician seeing you for treatment.

I Hope i have answered your question satisfactorily.
