Question: Hello. Two months ago, I had unprotected sex. This is my first time having having any sort of sexual contact in almost seven years and we only had sex once. Two or three days after we had sex my throat became very sore. Over the span of two weeks this escalated into flu-like symptoms. I had a fever, chills, muscle aches, fatigue, loss of appetite, and one case of diarrhea. I went to a local clinic and was told it was strep throat. I began antibiotics and started to feel better. However, one morning I woke up with a swollen face, stiff muscles, and it was difficult for me to breath. I went to the hospital where I had a basic test run (I did disclose I had had unprotected sex to my doctor). Based on the blood test results, my doctor thought I either had EBV or CMV. Another blood test was run, and it came up positive for CMV. Since the antibiotics did help my symptoms, my doctor thinks I probably had strep throat and CMV at the same time.
Since this diagnosis, I have experienced no further symptoms and feel completely healthy. As I never experienced any sexual related ailments, I assumed I was in the clear for STIs. However, it was recently brought to my attention that HIV is often symptomless, and when individual are first infected they can have symptoms very close to CMV. Some affected individuals are more prone to getting CMV. Based on this information, I was wondering if it sounds like I could have HIV and if it is worth having another blood test.

Brief Answer:
This in not HIV related

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I understand your concerns.

Following is my reply:

1) Your sexual encounter might be unrelated to these symptoms. These symptoms might be due to a random viral infection.

2) What test was done for CMV? IgG or IgM positive?

3) This is absolutely unrelated to HIV. No need to worry about HIV and no testing is required.

Thank you for your response.
To answer your second question, my test has both IgG and IgM results on it. IgM was 0.83 and IgG was 18.9.

Brief Answer:
CMV is not reason for this

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

IgM levels are low meaning negative. This must be old infection and no reason to worry. CMV is not a reason for this.
