Question: Hello Im 5'2" and weight is 260lb i was put on metaformin 6 months ago and took it faithfully but recents due to stomach problems when taking it i stopped for awhile. Which leads me to my problem recently my feet and lower legs have been swelling and about 2 weeks ago my pcp but me on a water pill only 12.5 mg. I was in Aruba this past week for vacation and my lower legs and feet were swollen. Flying didn't help either. Usually if my feet swell they go down the next day. I sit all day at my job witch doesn't help the cirulation but since i flew back on Monday they haven't gone down. I did restart my metformin yesterday. Should i be further concerned since they haven't gone down?

Brief Answer:
Answer given below

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
I am Dr.Barani and I am pleased to assist you.

I presume both the legs are swollen.
Prolonged standing or keeping the legs in the dependent position for a prolonged period of time as during flight journey can cause the legs and feet to swell. But this will resolve overnight when you lie flat while sleeping. You can also keep a pillow or two below the legs and keep them elevated to make it resolve better. Also during the day by avoiding prolonged sitting and keeping the legs dependent for a long time, you can take short breaks and walk or keep the legs on a chair in front of you while sitting.

Sometimes the swelling could be due to medical issues. Some of the causes of swelling in both the legs/feet are heart issues, kidney issues and liver issues. These are usually associated with other symptoms like decreased urine output, breathlessness etc. Sometimes it can also be due to deep vein thrombosis which is associated with pain.

So if the swelling is not resolving I advise you to see a doctor for examination to rule out medical causes described above.
Regards,
Dr.Barani.
