Is Sporadic Sharp Pain In The Pelvic Area Due The Weight That I Have Recently Gained?

Question: Hello Doctor.
My question is, I stopped smoking in January and have gained about 15 lbs to date. I realize I have been compensating food for the loss of the cigarettes and am slowly working my way out of the food habit as well. however, the majority of my weight gain is in my stomach area , hence increasing my waist size by almost 2-3 inches. My problem comes in where I sporadically get sharp pains in my sides under the ribcage or my pelvic/groin area , it doesn't last, it just comes and goes... I am drinking alot of water and urinating plenty but am concerned about these sporadic sharp pains I am getting.. could they be from the added weight? Just as an FYI, my brother passed two years ago from pancreatic cancer, which started with stomach pain. Last Sept I had undergone an upper Endoscopy and CT Scan of my abdominal area and all came out perfectly normal but now it has become a concern as well.. Any ideas or advice you can offer would be of great assist. Thank you !

The pain in the side of pelvic area probably due to the weight gain.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I read carefully your query and understand your concern.
The pain in the side of the pelvic area that you are feeling can be related to overweight.
It can be related to inguinal hernia.

Inguinal hernia is a condition where abdominal content pass through the inguinal canal.
One of the main causes is overweight.
There are hernias that do not present with a bulge, but yet they have symptoms like pain in the area.

I suggest you to visit a physician for a physical examination to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment consist in surgery if needed.
