Question: Hello- I have a question.
42 yr old male, 6 ft. 205 pounds
August 1st: noticed dermatographia urticaria, which I’ve never had before.
Sept 1-5: took a Z-pack for a sinus infection
Sept 9: had a gi “attack”- severe nausea, no appetite for 24 hrs, took 15mg Prevacid for 14 days, started to feel better each day
Oct. 20: had a second attack, nausea, pressure, etc except this time I had a fever of 99.8, which lasted for 24 hours. Started to feel better but then on Oct 25 had another similar attack- went to ER. Lipase and CBC/diff/troponin were all normal, although neutrophils were just slightly elevated at 82%. (Lab threshold was 78%) - but the dr didn’t mention it as a concern. Preliminary X-ray seemed fine.
It has been one week since the ER visit and my appetite is low, lost a few pounds, intermittent nausea, and bloating after eating. Upped my Prevacid to 30mg a day.
Does this sound like h. pylori infection to you?

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
I am Dr.R.K and I am pleased to assist you.
You have dyspeptic symptoms and H.pylori is just one of the causes of dyspepsia. The symptoms you have described are non specific and it is difficult to say whether it is due to H.pylori without testing for it.
You can get an Urea Breath Test done to see whether your dyspeptic symptoms are due to H.pylori infection.

Dr.R.K.

I’m sorry but this doesn’t tell me anything. I’m aware of the methods for pylori testing (and I’m going to do that) but that’s not what I’m asking; it would be helpful to me to quote how often in your clinical practice people present with symptoms as such and end up having an active Hp infection. It other words, based on the trajectory of events, how likely or unlikely does this sound like Hp to you?

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I have clearly mentioned in my previous post, that the symptoms you have described are quite non specific and it is difficult to say whether your symptoms are due to H.pylori infection.
If your question is how likely would the symptoms described by you is due to H pylori infection based on my clinical practice, I would say less than one third of those presenting with symptoms you have described are found to be positive for H.pylori.
Does that answer your question?
Regards,
Dr.R.K
