For The Past Few Weeks I Have Had An Aching

Posted on Sun, 19 May 2019
Question: For the past few weeks I have had an aching under my heel and on the inside of my left foot, with swelling and broken blood vessels. I have not had any injury that I recall, but I do have flat feet and also autoimmune disorder, Sjogrens Syndrome. It is really stiff and painful when I wake up and feels a little better when I start walking around. I walk around a lot at work, up and down stairs frequently. I take Advil but only helps a little, find I am limping a lot.

Brief Answer:
Can be plantar fasciitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Pain in the heel with swelling and broken blood vessels can be due to an inflammation like plantar fasciitis.
A short term rest and oral anti inflammatory drugs are required to take care of the inflammation.
To help the pain, ice the area immediately after getting up in the morning. You can use either a store-bought cold pack or a frozen wet towel. Ice for 10 or 15 minutes. To reduce inflammation, take an aspirin or ibuprofen at mealtime.

A 4-inch wide Crepe bandage wrapped around the region also helps reduce discomfort.
Calf and anterior (front of) leg stretching and strengthening addresses the biomechanical problems and reduces pain.
You may need few physiotherapy sessions along with prescription anti inflammatory drugs after getting yourself examined from an Orthopedician.

I hope this answers your query.
In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.
Wishing you good health.

Thank you doctor, for your response. I don't know how much I can rest my foot, as I work 8 hours and do a lot of walking around our building. I will try to icing when I get up, that's when it hurts the most, and will take Advil again. I have taken it before, but it's hard for me to take regularly, as it bothers my stomach. Do I need to ice the area before I go to bed, also? And how long does something like this take to go away?

Brief Answer:
Local steroid shot can help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Icing is not needed before going to bed. The inflammation may take 4-6 weeks to subside. In case the pain is persistent then do get it examined by an orthopedician and get a local steroid shot for an earlier relief.
Hope my answer is helpful.
