Question: Dr. XXXXXXX XXXXXXX ,
Thanks for asking. I am fine with the previous issue you answered, but now I have a new issue where I noticed that since I don't usually eat fried foods because of my IBS, I noticed this week for the first time in over 20 years of my life that after I ate a fried Chinese egg roll on Monday and the next day three onion rings, I have had a watery bowel movement almost every day since Monday, but the other bowel movements each day are normal. I sometimes have three to four bowel movements a day with this IBS and sometimes I don't go at all or I go once a day, but I haven't seen watery bowel movements for over 20 years! I am going to be 67 in August. Why is that happening now? I feel fine otherwise. I am guessing the fried food irritated my stomach somehow, and it will take about a week or two to straighten itself out. Is that right?

Brief Answer:
Follow up IBS with fatty diarrhoea

Detailed Answer:
Hi....
Welcome to Ask a doctor.
I am Dr Ajeet XXXXXXX
Yes.....you are right in that.
Fatty, greasy and oily foods are hard to digest.Specially the people who have IBS have prime difficulty in absorbing fats and unabsorbed fat cause small intestines and colon to secrete more water thus causing watery diarrhoea and cramping and unabsorbed fat is lost fast in stools.
It will take 3 to 4 days for your body system to become normal.
For the time being, take small frequent meals instead of large 3 major meals.Take bland diet.Have yogurt and commercially available probiotic preparations.Be physically active.Replenish the salts orally which are being lost in stools to avoid fatigue and cramping.Keep yourself well hydrated as enormous water amounts are being lost. The more you focus on good hydration, the better you will feel.Drinking enough water keeps your bowel moving and prevent build-up of waste and overgrowth of unwanted bacteria.
Don't worry. You will be fine soon.
Regards.
